An incredibly busy summer transfer market has come to an end and the result is a new look Atalanta. Which gives us lots of questions going into the new campaign like which new signing is the best? Are we stronger or weaker than last season? and where will we finish in the league? To get the answers I spoke with Atalanta enthusiast and tactical expert Atalanta Match Views, and legendary Atalanta match going fan Tommy Farr aka Gingerzola. We also explore the most important question of all, what does it actually mean to see your team win a Europa League? 

1) Which of the new signings has pleased you the most?

Atalanta Match Views:"Personally, Bellanova. Atalanta normally does not purchase the best players of the league in their positions but it was refreshing to see arguably the best right back in the league donning our colours"

Gingerzola:In terms of the excitement factor surrounding a new signing, I'd have to say Lazar Samardzic as he's a player I've always liked the look of and, once settled, I think he will add a real element of creative flair centrally to the midfield that we may have lacked a little in recent times. Obviously, Retegui - about who I could never understand the initial negativity from some in relation to his signing - and Brescianini - who appears to have much more to his game than just ticking the functional but unspectacular midfielder box that I'd put him in - have both hit the ground running.

2) How easy is it going to be for Atalanta to find form with all the new players arriving and getting used to Gasperini's style?

Atalanta Match Views:"On the contrary, it will not be easy, at least the fitting in will not be quick in my opinion, even a player like Ederson needed a few months to fully integrate into the team dynamics, and i think a few players might need a bit of time as well. Plus we will need some time to instill the winning mentality of Atalanta for the players brought in from Genoa, Udinese and Torino."

Gingerzola:"I'm a massive Gasperini fan, naturally, but I couldn't agree more with him in regards to the transfer window and imploring the authorities to bring about a change that sees it close at the end of July instead of August. The Gasperini system isn't the easiest for any new signing to immediately infiltrate and integrate themselves into and I feel his frustrations that coaching staffs don't get more time to work with the squad that they're going to be leading into battle before the bullets start flying. I am though not panicking after two defeats and remain positive that once this burst of early season injuries subsides and players settle into their new surroundings and come to term with the demands of the staff that we'll be up there, challenging once again. As I see things so far, we are only a late Pasalic penalty miss away from having the points tally that I expected at this stage, whilst being +1 point from the corresponding fixtures last season. Talk of any late summer crisis at the club remains absurd to me."

3) Are Atalanta stronger or weaker than last season?

Atalanta Match Views:"stronger in my opinion,most of the signings are either upgrades or is a fitting replacement of the injured players we have right now. willl it translate to trophies, i cannot tell but we can compete for them surely"

Gingerzola:"Losing Koopmeiners would come as a huge blow to any club in this division but it is one that we had to have expected. To me, I feel that we had one extra season of Teun than I expected and it culminated in a fantastic evening of glory in Dublin. That said, the manner in which he went about manufacturing his departure was to spit in the face of a club and fanbase who, in my opinion at least, would not have begrudged him had he gone about it in more civil fashion. That Lookman seemed to follow his lead after having his head prematurely turned was not only another massive disappointment and show of disrespect, but also an enormous loss to the team over the first three matches.
When you add in the misfortune of long-term injuries to Scalvini and Scamacca, it is hard to imagine that we could even dream of being stronger than last season, yet that is exactly what I believe we are. Incoming deals for Kossounou and Retegui mitigate those huge blows, while deals for Bellanova, Zaniolo, Samardzic, Brescianini, Cuadrado and Sulemana add pace, creativity, unpredictability and depth to an already competitive squad."

4) League finish prediction? + How far can we go in the Champions League?


Atalanta Match Views:"I think if we can warp off the mistakes and stay mostly injury free, we will get top 3, maybe even top 2. challenging for the league is difficult, but we can at least put good pressure on the teams above us, and finally be a bit consistent. As for the champions league, it will depend a lot on our league stage position, but I think we will be making a good run and a quarter final finish, if we get a favourable draw."

Gingerzola:"Making predictions at this stage can make you look a little silly but I see absolutely no reason why Gasperini won't have us right in contention for another Champions League qualification via league position again. As the season wears on, the system will become easier for new signings to understand and make an impression, whilst we should also be strengthened in time by two massive additions in Scalvini and Scamacca following their injuries. If we can keep ourselves in contention until the New Year, I also expect another attack on the market to further add to the quality available. I would be disappointed if we exit the Champions League at the initial hurdle - something which I don't expect to happen. With a kind draw or two, I wouldn't be surprised to see us in the last 8, and from there, anything can happen."

5) I know you have followed Atalanta for a long time, so finally, we all got to enjoy winning the Europa League last season, now we have had some time to reflect on that, I would love to hear what it meant to you to see Atalanta lift the trophy and has it changed how you think about the team or your ambitions for our club this season?

Atalanta Match Views: "The best feeling in the world, seeing the club you have followed for such a long time prove people wrong and bring silverware home. The players sacrificed their blood and sweat for that and deserved to be congratulated. And also, yes it does! All these years we have been termed as just pushovers who exists just to give bigger teams a tough time winning trophies, but now we are grouped with those clubs as well. For me we have always had enough to win silverware, just was unlucky in certain occasions but now, as we have taken the next step, I will expect my team to continue the trend and keep winning trophies."

Gingerzola:"Wins or losses never alter the way I feel about the club, they only add to the memories - and memories of the nights in Dublin or at Anfield, or those formed on the Curva Nord against Sporting, Liverpool and Marseille will never fade.
I've never seen West Brom, my English first love, lift anything other than the Championship (Serie B) trophy - which was itself incredible - so to see my little, old Goddess with her black and blue ribbons on a major European trophy was a surreal dream that was celebrated long into the night on the banks of the Liffey! Nights like those only serve to whet the appetite for more and, with Gasperini leading the team, we will always have the capability to surprise and amaze us all again."

Who is Gingerzola? Hi, my name is Tommy Farr, I'm 43 and I've been a West Bromwich Albion season ticket holder since I was age 4 or 5. I took Atalanta into my heart during the Channel 4, Gazzetta Football Italia days of the 1990s and have been a supporter ever since. 

In the 90s, as he remains now, Pippo Inzaghi was my favourite goalscorer, loving his natural instincts in the box and his eternal enthusiasm for finding the back of the net, whichever part of his body it went in off or from however far out, the celebration was always like he'd just scored the winner in the World Cup/Europa League Final. I regularly watch highlights of the season he ended up as capocannoniere. 

Following on from Pippo, Atalanta always had exciting attackers, right through to recent seasons, and, as we all know, a manager in Gian Piero Gasperini who knows how to get the best out of them. 

Unfortunately I never got to visit Bergamo until fairly recently so I missed out on standing on the old Curva Nord as well as not getting to see the incredible pairing of Papu Gomez and Josip Ilicic - the dream of my first planned visit curtailed by Covid. Now though I am a regular visitor and consider Bergamo my second home, my spiritual home and, hopefully, also my future home. I've even set up a little business aimed at providing bespoke travel packages for people who may be unaware of the beauty of the region called Escape To Bergamo ( escapetobergamo.com). 

Every visit results in finding something else to love around the city, another friend to add to my phone and another local dish to try. You'll usually find me eating with the locals at Trattoria Parietti or relaxing with Silvia and her staff in The Tucans so if you see a mop of ginger hair and hear an English accent, come and say hello.

L'INTERVISTA TRADOTTA IN ITALIANO
Un mercato di trasferimenti estivo incredibilmente intenso è giunto al termine e il risultato è un'Atalanta con un nuovo look. Il che ci pone molte domande in vista della nuova campagna, come quale nuovo acquisto è il migliore? Siamo più forti o più deboli della scorsa stagione? E dove finiremo in campionato? Per ottenere le risposte ho parlato con l'appassionato di Atalanta ed esperto di tattica Atalanta Match Views e il leggendario tifoso dell'Atalanta Tommy Farr, alias Gingerzola. Esploriamo anche la domanda più importante di tutte, cosa significa realmente vedere la tua squadra vincere un'Europa League?

1) Quale dei nuovi acquisti ti ha fatto più piacere?

Atalanta Match Views: "Personalmente, Bellanova. L'Atalanta di solito non acquista i migliori giocatori del campionato nelle loro posizioni, ma è grande vedere quello che probabilmente è il miglior terzino destro del campionato indossare i nostri colori"

Gingerzola: In termini di eccitazione per ogni nuovo acquisto, direi Lazar Samardzic, perché è un giocatore di cui mi è sempre piaciuto come gioca e, una volta sistemato, penso che aggiungerà un vero elemento di estro creativo al centrocampo che potrebbe essere mancato un po' negli ultimi tempi. Ovviamente, Retegui, di cui non sono mai riuscito a capire la negatività iniziale di alcuni in relazione al suo acquisto, e Brescianini, che sembra avere molto di più nel suo gioco che spuntare semplicemente la casella di centrocampista funzionale ma poco spettacolare in cui lo metterei, hanno entrambi iniziato bene.

2) Quanto sarà facile per l'Atalanta trovare la forma con tutti i nuovi giocatori che arrivano dovendo abituarsi allo stile di Gasperini?

Atalanta Match Views: "Non sarà facile, almeno l'inserimento non sarà rapido secondo me, anche un giocatore come Ederson ha avuto bisogno di qualche mese per integrarsi completamente nelle dinamiche di squadra, e penso che anche alcuni giocatori potrebbero aver bisogno di un po' di tempo. Inoltre, avremo bisogno di un po' di tempo per instillare la mentalità vincente dell'Atalanta nei giocatori portati da Genoa, Udinese e Torino."

Gingerzola: "Sono un grande fan di Gasperini, naturalmente, ma non potrei essere più d'accordo con lui per quanto riguarda la finestra di mercato che dovrebbe chiudersi a fine luglio invece che ad agosto. Il sistema Gasperini non è il più facile per qualsiasi nuovo acquisto in cui infiltrarsi e integrarsi immediatamente e sento la sua frustrazione per il fatto che gli staff degli allenatori non hanno più tempo per lavorare con la squadra che guideranno . Tuttavia, non sono in preda al panico dopo due sconfitte e resto positivo sul fatto che una volta che questa ondata di infortuni di inizio stagione si sarà placata e i giocatori si saranno ambientati al loro nuovo ambiente e avranno fatto i conti con le richieste dello staff, saremo lì, di nuovo in gioco. Per come la vedo io finora, siamo solo a un rigore sbagliato da Pasalic di distanza dal raggiungere i punti che mi aspettavo a questo punto, pur essendo +1 punto rispetto alle partite corrispondenti della scorsa stagione. Parlare di una crisi di fine estate al club rimane assurdo per me".

3) L'Atalanta è più forte o più debole della scorsa stagione?

Atalanta Match Views: "più forte a mio parere, la maggior parte degli acquisti sono o miglioramenti o una degna sostituzione dei giocatori infortunati che abbiamo in questo momento. Si tradurrà in trofei, non posso dirlo, ma possiamo sicuramente competere per ottenerli"

Gingerzola: "Perdere Koopmeiners sarebbe un duro colpo per qualsiasi club, ma è qualcosa che dovevamo aspettarci. Per me, penso che abbiamo avuto una stagione in più di Teun di quanto mi aspettassi e che si è conclusa con una fantastica serata di gloria a Dublino. Detto questo, il modo in cui ha organizzato la sua partenza è stato quello di sputare in faccia a un club e a una tifoseria che, almeno a mio parere, non gli avrebbero rinfacciato se si fosse comportato in modo più civile. Il fatto che Lookman sembrasse seguire il suo esempio dopo aver girato la testa prematuramente non è stata solo un'altra enorme delusione e una dimostrazione di mancanza di rispetto, ma anche un'enorme perdita per la squadra nelle prime tre partite.

Quando si aggiunge la sfortuna degli infortuni a lungo termine di Scalvini e Scamacca, è difficile immaginare che potremmo anche solo sognare di essere più forti della scorsa stagione, eppure è esattamente ciò che credo che siamo. Gli accordi in arrivo per Kossounou e Retegui mitigano quei duri colpi, mentre gli accordi per Bellanova, Zaniolo, Samardzic, Brescianini, Cuadrado e Sulemana aggiungono ritmo, creatività, imprevedibilità e profondità a una squadra già competitiva."

4) Pronostico di arrivo in campionato? + Quanto lontano possiamo arrivare in Champions League?

Atalanta Match Views:"Penso che se riusciamo a eliminare gli errori e a rimanere per lo più senza infortuni, arriveremo tra i primi 3, forse anche tra i primi 2. È difficile competere per il campionato, ma possiamo almeno mettere una buona pressione sulle squadre sopra di noi e finalmente essere un po' costanti. Per quanto riguarda la Champions League, dipenderà molto dalla nostra posizione in classifica, ma penso che faremo una buona corsa e un arrivo ai quarti di finale, con un po' di fortuna."

Gingerzola: "Fare previsioni in questa fase può farti sembrare un po' sciocco, ma non vedo assolutamente alcun motivo per cui Gasperini non ci veda in lizza per un'altra qualificazione alla Champions League tramite la posizione in classifica. Con l'avanzare della stagione, il sistema diventerà più facile da capire per i nuovi acquisti e da lasciare un'impressione, mentre dovremmo anche essere rafforzati nel tempo da due massicce aggiunte come Scalvini e Scamacca dopo i loro infortuni. Se riusciremo a rimanere in lizza fino al nuovo anno, mi aspetto anche un altro attacco al mercato per aumentare ulteriormente la qualità disponibile. Sarei deluso se uscissimo dalla Champions League al primo ostacolo, cosa che non mi aspetto che accada. Con un sorteggio o due, non sarei sorpreso di vederci negli ultimi 8, e da lì, tutto può succedere".

5) So che segui l'Atalanta da molto tempo, quindi finalmente, ci siamo goduti tutti la vittoria dell'Europa League la scorsa stagione, ora che abbiamo avuto un po' di tempo per riflettere su questo, mi piacerebbe sapere cosa ha significato per te vedere l'Atalanta sollevare il trofeo e ha cambiato il modo in cui pensi alla squadra o alle tue ambizioni per il nostro club in questa stagione?

Atalanta Match Views: "La sensazione più bella del mondo, vedere il club che hai seguito per così tanto tempo dimostrare che le persone si sbagliano e portare a casa l'argenteria. I giocatori hanno sacrificato il loro sangue e sudore per questo e meritavano di essere congratulati. E inoltre, sì, lo meritano! Per tutti questi anni siamo stati definiti solo come dei deboli che esistono solo per dare filo da torcere alle squadre più grandi per vincere trofei, ma ora siamo raggruppati anche con quei club. Per me abbiamo sempre avuto abbastanza per vincere l'argenteria, siamo stati solo sfortunati in certe occasioni ma ora, poiché abbiamo fatto il passo successivo, mi aspetto che la mia squadra continui la tendenza e continui a vincere trofei".

Gingerzola: "Le vittorie o le sconfitte non cambiano mai il modo in cui mi sento nei confronti del club, si aggiungono solo ai ricordi, e i ricordi delle notti a Dublino o ad Anfield, o di quelle formate sulla Curva Nord contro Sporting, Liverpool e Marsiglia non svaniranno mai.

Non ho mai visto il West Bromwich, il mio primo amore inglese, sollevare altro che il trofeo del campionato (Serie B), che era di per sé incredibile, quindi vedere la mia piccola, vecchia Dea con i suoi nastri neri e blu su un importante trofeo europeo è stato un sogno surreale che è stato celebrato fino a notte fonda sulle rive del Liffey! Notti come quelle servono solo a stuzzicare l'appetito per altro e, con Gasperini alla guida della squadra, avremo sempre la capacità di sorprenderci e stupirci di nuovo tutti."

Chi è Gingerzola? Ciao, mi chiamo Tommy Farr, ho 43 anni e sono abbonato al West Bromwich Albion da quando avevo 4 o 5 anni. Ho preso l'Atalanta nel mio cuore durante i giorni di Channel 4, Gazzetta Football Italia degli anni '90 e da allora sono un tifoso.

Negli anni '90, come lo è ancora oggi, Pippo Inzaghi era il mio cannoniere preferito, amava il suo istinto naturale in area di rigore e il suo eterno entusiasmo nel trovare il fondo della rete, da qualsiasi parte del suo corpo entrasse o da qualsiasi distanza, la celebrazione era sempre come se avesse appena segnato il gol della vittoria nella finale di Coppa del Mondo/Europa League. Guardo regolarmente i momenti salienti della stagione in cui è finito come capocannoniere.

Dopo Pippo, l'Atalanta ha sempre avuto attaccanti entusiasmanti, fino alle ultime stagioni, e, come tutti sappiamo, un allenatore in Gian Piero Gasperini che sa come ottenere il meglio da loro.

Purtroppo non sono mai riuscito a visitare Bergamo fino a poco tempo fa, quindi mi sono perso la possibilità di stare sulla vecchia Curva Nord e di non vedere l'incredibile coppia di Papu Gomez e Josip Ilicic, il sogno della mia prima visita programmata troncato dal Covid. Ora però sono un visitatore abituale e considero Bergamo la mia seconda casa, la mia casa spirituale e, si spera, anche la mia futura casa. Ho persino avviato una piccola attività volta a fornire pacchetti di viaggio su misura per le persone che potrebbero non essere a conoscenza della bellezza della regione chiamata Escape To Bergamo ( escapetobergamo.com).

Ogni visita si traduce in qualcosa di diverso da amare in città, un altro amico da aggiungere al mio telefono e un altro piatto locale da provare. Di solito mi trovi a mangiare con la gente del posto alla Trattoria Parietti o a rilassarmi con Silvia e il suo staff al The Tucans, quindi se vedi una zazzera di capelli rossi e senti un accento inglese, vieni a salutarmi.
